Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company’s web site,

This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that “It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat it.”

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called ‘Theobromine’. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

This is legit. And the stats they themselves offer mean you can expect this to happen once every hundred times, which means a lot of potential damage when sales are in the millions.

Please just don’t even buy this stuff. Even if you don’t have a dog, it’s not cool to buy mulch that attracts dogs and can kill them.

Is this movie ever coming out? I mean, I’m gonna see it on cast alone.

It’s stuck in this terrible movie limbo, because all of the production companies involved are fighting with each other, and it’s gotten to the point where they’d rather let the movie just sit unreleased, than release it and let one of the other companies make money too.

I can’t decide if this looks terrible or gloriously terrible.

Either way, I’m watching this masterpiece.

So, are we starting a kickstarter to get this glorious piece of cinematic history released, or……?

I agree with all of this except the Amy part. I personally love Amy. :)

Thus why I dislike Moffat. Don’t really agree about Amy and the “white girls blabber” comment pisses me off but other than that, a big fat yes to all.

Yeah, that comment bothered me as well.

I hate the whole “white girls” thing. Excuse me, aren’t all teenagers fucking annoying? I just don’t understand why it has to be specifically “white girls” or even girls at all. People in general can always be annoying. Other than that, it was a great, well thought out post. Just…. leave shit like “white girls” out of it.

I think she meant it as a meme, Delilah, a stereotype (like the Ditzy Blonde, which has no real basis).

And, though I disagree with some things here, others are spot on. I stopped watching Who after 10th, except for certain episodes, because it was just so… grating. And I was never the die-hard fan so I could choose to just walk away.

And his comments regarding Rose and women in general… Talk about poor taste.

No I get that it’s a meme but it still bugs me. It’s a generalization of a group of people and even though it was a passing comment I still find it bothers me. :\

Yeah, I’ve gotten to the point where I get bored halfway through the episode and I just don’t care anymore. I really hope they get it back in hand soon, preferably by dumping him from the responsibility of writing. I hadn’t ever heard all of these things he’s said, but any respect or appreciation I ever had for him as a writer flew right out the window. What a jackass. Hopefully the 50th anniversary will have some guest writers to straighten it out and see it through to it’s full potential.

To be honest the moment I read this I googled the quotes, convinced he hadn’t said half the things it said here or that they had been twisted into sounding awful… Nope. He totally said those things. There’s a post here that details all of his sexist quotes as well as links to the actual interviews so it can all be backed up. My personal favourite is when he talks about casting Amy Pond, and how he’d auditioned a girl who was fantastic, but had one small problem:

“And I thought, ‘well she’s really good. It’s just a shame she’s so wee and dumpy…When she was about to come through to the auditions I nipped out for a minute and I saw Karen walking on the corridor towards me and I realised she was 5’11, slim and gorgeous and I thought ‘Oh, oh that’ll probably work’.”

Oh heaves yes, THIS. And all the commentary above too.

I too really enjoyed Amy. I feel like she could have been an amazing independent character, but Moffat likes his damsels in distress, and so constantly forcefully reset her to dependent child mode, which was heartbreaking. Even her running off the night before her wedding, you can do some real emotional depth about growing up and so on, but he didn’t really *go* anywhere with that in any meaningful way, and it just ended up with Amy having a strained relationship with basically fandom’s most beloved male EVER, ie her perfect husband.

And Moffat’s doing the same to Clara, this independent-who-is-foced-to-be-dependent-because-we-want-the-Doctor-to-save-her, who in the end, isn’t all that fundamentally different from Amy, except perhaps that she is slightly more humorous and slightly more dependent from the outset.

River, when she is introduced, is intriguing as hell, but he just ruins everything he set up. I out and out hated her for a while, and it drove me crazy.

I think the only reason I never hated Moffat’s main female leads totally is because the actresses do such a fantastic job with the shit they’ve been given to work with.

Here are 5 things to avoid saying to someone with FMS, ME/CFS, or other “invisible” illnesses:

“You look great—you must be feeling better.”Looks can be deceiving. It’s possible, even likely, that we’re just getting better about concealing how we feel, not actually feeling better. Or it might be a single good day after a month of horrible days. Either way, this comment—which may have been intended as a compliment—makes a lot of people feel misunderstood. It’s a judgment made without an effort to truly learn how we’re doing.

“Let’s get you out of the house. It’ll give you a boost!” Believe me, most chronically ill people would love to get out of the house more. If we’re staying home all the time, it’s likely that we’re not feeling well enough to get out. Being pressured to do something we’re not physically up to causes added stress, which makes us worse.

“Are you sure you’re not just depressed?” It’s true that many of us are depressed, and even if we’re not, the symptoms can be similar. However, depression alone can’t explain the broad range of symptoms we experience, which is often several dozen. This comment discounts the validity of our physiological ailments. (Plus, depression is a very real and serious illness, so the phrase “just depressed” is never appropriate.)

“I know how you feel; I get tired, too. “ If you’re so tired that you feel on the verge of complete physical, mental and emotional collapse, you might know how we feel. Otherwise, statements like that make it seem like you’re trivializing an illness that’s much more than being tired. If you want to appear understanding, you’re better off saying something like, “I’ve been really exhausted lately. I don’t know how you live like that all the time.”

“If you’d (exercise more/lose weight/eat a better diet/get back to work) you’d feel better.” While exercise or dietary change do help some people with these conditions, the wrong changes can make us much worse. We know our bodies best, and we need to research those changes for ourselves. Losing weight is extremely difficult for someone who can’t be very active, and being told to do so is hard on the self-esteem. Plus, there’s no evidence that losing weight would help much anyway. When it comes to “getting back to work,” again, that’s something most of us would love to do but can’t.

So What SHOULD You Say?

Now that you have an idea what topics to avoid, here’s a look at some things that would be especially welcome by people with these conditions.

“If you’re not up to going out, we can just get together and (talk/play cards/watch a movie).” This shows that you understand the limitations of the illness and gives the person an alternative to canceling plans that may better accommodate their symptoms.

“Let’s do our grocery (or Christmas) shopping together. I’ll pick you up.” Shopping can be extremely tiring for us, and it can really help to have someone else there to help with things like loading and unloading the car, or trekking back across the store for a forgotten item on the other side. A really good friend will read Holiday Shopping With FMS & ME/CFS and give helpful suggestions while out and about.

“How much are you up for today?” This shows that you understand energy levels can vary from day to day and can help your companion feel comfortable expressing his/her limitations.

“How are things going?” This is better than asking “how do you feel?” It opens the door to all aspects of life, instead of just physical well-being. Most days, I don’t feel that great, but other aspects of my life might be going really well.

“Can I (give you a ride/help with that/etc.)?” This works better than something like, “Do you need me to….” because it shows a willingness to help without implying the person is incapable or is a burden.

Great advice. I wish I could have passed this around to everyone I know when I was not on thyroid medication.
